2. Answer the following Questions (use quotes where applicable):
  • What characteristics does King Henry say are best for men in times of PEACE?
  • modest stillness and humility. 'In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
    As modest stillness and humility'

  • What should men be like in war?
A tiger. 'But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.'

  • What does Henry say about the English and their ancestors?
They are noble and war proof. ' you noblest English,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof,
Fathers that like so many Alexanders'

  • What does he mean when he says 'Be copy now to men of grosser blood.'?
Be like the men with worse blood and show them how its done.

  • What is Henry saying you have to become in order to be successful in war?
You have to be a ruthless killer like a tiger.

KING HARRY:
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility,
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage.
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect,
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon, let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swilled with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath, and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof,
Fathers that like so many Alexanders
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you called fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeomen,
Whose limbs were made in England
, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding- which I doubt not,
For there is none of you so mean and base
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot.
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Othello (Act I sc iii) - Iago

Summary: In this section of the play, the villain Iago is motivating Rodrigo to act upon his feelings for Desdemona and even though she is committed to Othello ('the Moor'). Iago wants to take down Othello without actually doing it himself.

Highlight where the following persuasive techniques are used:

  • repetition
  • alliteration
  • extended metaphor

Answer the following questions using quotes where applicable:

  • What extended metaphor is used in this speech? Is this metaphor positive or negative towards women? Explain.
  • 'the food that to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be to him shortly as bitter as coloquintida.' The metaphor is negative as she is represented as his food which is luscious but will become bitter.
  • How does the metaphor related to Rodrigo becoming more proactive in his pursuit of Desdemona?
  • He believes Othello will loose her and so Rodrigo will pursue her more.
  • How does Othello characterise Othello ('the moor')?
  • How does Iago describe Rodrigo being passive? What will he do to himself if he doesn't act?
  • He's not trying. If he doesn't act he will drown.

IAGO
It is merely a lust of the blood and a permission of
the will. Come, be a man. Drown thyself! drown
cats and blind puppies. I have professed me thy
friend and I confess me knit to thy deserving with
cables of perdurable toughness; I could never
better stead thee than now. Put money in thy
purse; follow thou the wars; defeat thy favour with
an usurped beard; I say, put money in thy purse. It
cannot be that Desdemona should long continue her
love to the Moor,-- put money in thy purse,--nor he
his to her: it was a violent commencement, and thou
shalt see an answerable sequestration:--put but
money in thy purse. These Moors are changeable in
their wills: fill thy purse with money:--the food
that to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be
to him shortly as bitter as coloquintida. She must
change for youth: when she is sated with his body,
she will find the error of her choice: she must
have change, she must: therefore put money in thy
purse. If thou wilt needs damn thyself, do it a
more delicate way than drowning. Make all the money
thou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt
an erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not
too hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou
shalt enjoy her; therefore make money. A pox of
drowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek
thou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than
to be drowned and go without her.

The Merchant of Venice: Act IV sc i - Portia

Summary: In this scene Portia is pleading to Shylock for the life of Antonio. Antonio is responsible for the debt that Bassanio owes Shylock. Bassanio is Portia's partner and needed money to be with Portia. When Bassanio borrowed the money the punishment for failure to pay back the money on time was 'a pound of flesh' which would cause certain death. Bassanio didn't pay the debt back in time and now Shylock wants his 'pound of flesh' from Antonio. Portia is trying to get Shylock to change his mind and see the virtue of being merciful.

Find and highlight these techniques in the speech:

Answer the following questions using quotes where applicable:
How does Portia describe mercy? How important and powerful is it?
It is powerful and from god. 'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes', 'It is an attribute to God himself'

What can one achieve through mercy?
Justice. 'When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy'

How is religion part of this speech? (You need to do some thinking on this one.)
It talks about how mercy is a godly power. The person believes it is the work of god and is therefore religious.
The quality of mercy is not strain'd, -easy
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven  - similie    religion=christianity
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;       mercy + God
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:   - Parallel structure

The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,  -temporary
The attribute to awe and majesty,                      -symbolism
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;      -theme
And earthly power doth then show likest God's          She uses two themes to convince-religion and the law
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,     -
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

Reflection Statement

For my persuasive English speech I choose becoming an organ donor. The side I choose was in favour of becoming an organ donor. I choose this for a variety of reasons.
The main reason and why it caught my eye was that I generally believe donating an organ to save lives is a fantastic thing to do. Although personally I would probably only donate once I’m dead, I still believe anyone who donates, either when their alive or after they have died is generally a good person who with the donation, saved and dramatically changed one or more peoples lives. Something so simple that does not affect the donator physically at all can actually save a life, you need no medical training, and it doesn’t even cost you. It is the closest you will be to having some sort of godly power.

That was the main reason. The second reason I had for choosing this topic is that it is a very negotiable and very interesting topic with lots of views, though as the main benefit from donating an organ is saving a life, it makes it so much easier for me to persuade my audience in favour of donating then it is to persuade them against it.

The third reason why I choose this topic in favour of donating is that there is a lot of information about donating that majority of people don’t know. For this reason, my speech will be made far more interesting as the audience is far more likely to want to listen if they are hearing new things that they had not yet heard of. Other speeches majority of people already know a lot about the topic therefore making the speech boring and pointless causing them to not listen to what you are saying.

I choose in favour of becoming an organ donor because becoming an organ donor is a great topic I decided, to write a persuasive speech about with heavy pathos. T o be precise, a kind of story that puts the audience into the story as the character. The word, imagine draws the audience in at the start of my speech and makes them try to comprehend what I am saying also bringing them into this story. To appeal to the audiences emotions even more, the story, although not based on any one in particular, makes the audience self consciously think about Knox. For example: train station, their real English teachers name Mr Cav, the fact that we are being selected for our winter sports teams right now, and the person in the story is presenting  his English speech which the audience are also doing further making them become one with the character in the story. Most of my speech is in second-person helping them connect as it feels like I am talking directly to each person in the audience.
I then backed up my speech with some logos.

I intend to present my speech in slowly and deliberately serious as it is a serious topic. I will also use

Can you imagine one day going to your doctor for a check-up and finding out your life would end in a few short weeks? All your dreams gone down the drain, everything you wanted to do, you wanted to see, wanted to have, never happening. You would no doubt be devastated. Time would stop. How is it that outside, normal people go about their lives unchanged, happy?

Over the next few days it quickly dawns on you how little time you have left to live. You realise that you must try and do as much as possible in this short period of time you have left on this planet. But before you are even able to do that, you suddenly find yourself in a cold hospital full of people dressed in white clothes, rushing around, pushing beeping machines. Next to you your family sits, trying to act brave and not cry. You still don’t understand how your life went from being a happy normal life. Getting up and going to school, playing with your mates, worrying about school work, what your mum gave you for lunch, what winter sports team you’re going to get into this year. Getting home attacking the fridge, you do your homework, finished great, you relax, you realise that Mr Cav set you some homework, damn, you do that, great, time for bed. You’re lying there and you remember you have to present your English speech tomorrow, you feel well prepared. It’s the next day, Friday afternoon and you’re walking back to the train station with your mates, you’re in a happy mood, your class enjoyed your speech and it’s the weekend. Do you want to catch up for a movie tonight your friends ask, sure, you answer, you tell them you have a doctor’s appointment, the last few days you had been feeling a pain in your chest. You tell them you will meet them afterwards. You say good bye to your friends as you get off at your station. You see your mum waiting for you; she’s bought you something to eat. Thanks mum, you say. You’ve never really thought about how much she’s done for you. You drive to the doctors; you’re excited about tonight. There are some good movies on. The doctor walks in. He has a different look about him. He asks you to come with him. You walk in and he asks you to sit down. Its then that he tells you that you that one of your organs has stopped working properly. Your mum gasps as he tells you that you are going to die.

This isn’t the story of anyone in particular but a similar story that millions of people have gone through and will go through because there aren’t enough organ donors. Before you know it this could happen to not only other people but to me, you and the people who we love.

You should become an organ donor whether it be now, or when you die. Becoming an organ donor is a great thing because by donating a small part of your body, you are saving a person’s life. They would be for ever in your dept.

You can donate organs such as kidneys, a heart, lungs, liver and pancreas and tissues including heart valves, bone tissue, skin, eye and pancreas tissue.

One organ and tissue donor can save the lives of up to ten people and significantly improve the lives of dozens more.

But there are just not enough donators. Last year organ donors gave 931 Australians a new chance in life but unfortunately there are almost 1700 Australians  waiting for a transplant on the waiting list at any one time. Many Australians die each year waiting for the gift of a transplant and some spend weeks or even months in hospitals, with others making several trips to hospitals every week for treatment. Some people even need an oxygen tank 24 hours a day just to stay alive while they wait.

So please, become an organ donor and give a person a new life.

Tom spencer's speech feedback

  • Did the introduction capture you?
Yes it did from the first sentence it drew me in.

  • Is there enough information to convince you of their opinion?
Yes there was a good amount of logos in his speech. I did not realize you could donate so many parts of your body.
  • Is their opinion clearly organised?
Yes it is Tom put it into parts that I could make out.
  • What suggestions would you make to improve the speech?
A conclusion

Assessment Task 3 topics

Are zoos still relevent for animal preservation?
Yes they are, even more than they used to be as more animals are becoming extinct and some animals rely entirely on zoos. Zoos used to be designed for the public's entertainment, for the show of unique animals that you would not see locally but all over the world. Zoos today still do that and house many common animals found in other parts of the world but they are also one of the biggest place of animal preservation. Many animals rely entirely on particular zoos to keep their species alive. Without zoos many species of animals would become extinct.

Equality:Reality Ideal?
I don't think equality will be reality for a long time as it's human nature to have oppinions of other races of people. It is impossible for everyone not to dislike something about someone. The biggest factor is religion. There are so many religions and each one believes the other is wrong. That is why there are so many wars going on because one religion believes in something that the other doesn't and so one causes a war. The 9/11 bombing was a religious act which then was followed by a war. As well as that there are many other reasons why it would be impossible for equality to become a reality. People are born and raised with a belief, no one would be able to make every believe something else without a very good reason.

Reality TV:Innovation or Trash
Reality TV is trash as it is a waste of time and nobody wants to watch other people go around and do boring normal thimgs in their lives. There is already enough TV on right now and it is unhealthy to watch too much. Things like the news and some other educational programs are good as well as other shows like comedies but reality TV is always the same and seeing some one go about their normal lives is stupid as your wasting your life. Why not live your life, surely you don't need to watch someone else's when yours is ticking a way in front of you waiting to be lived.

Speaking Assessment Task

Nature of Task:

Persuasive texts are designed to position a point of view. (opinion-thesis)

Texts that successfully persuade are usually highly emotive (emotional words + influence listener/ audience emotions) (conveys an emotion) and effectively balance opinions with facts (research-Logos).

Persuasive texts can make sweeping generalizations(uninformed conclusions - be weary of these), rely on stereotypes and hyperbole and yet still seem credible(reliable information).

This is because a combination of objective (fact) and subjective (opinion) information is usually used to persuade.

Careful use of repetition and high modality words (persuasion techniques) can emphatically convey the composer’s purpose(subjective) if it is counterbalanced with the use of statistics, expert evidence and product/idea endorsement from authoritative sources(objective - facts).

Moreover, effective incorporation of anecdotes (small persona story), analogies (comparing two examples) and inclusive language (we, us, ours) (techniques) can personalize the message and help connect the composer and their text with its audience.

CAS Swimming Carnival.

This week an event that will go down in the history of Knox will take place.
From all over Sydney, schools will in the CAS comp will meet in one place for the biggest event of the year. There will be blood sweat and tears and only one school will take the title.

I have a dream that Knox will take the title this year. Too long has Trinity held this title. Too long has Knox just missed out. Too long has Knox been biting at the dust of our enemies. For too long Trinity has held what is rightfully ours, a right that has been earned by our tireless, fearless swim team.

Our team has worked countless hours swimming up and down that pool. One thing holds our swimmers back. This one thing, the ultimate weapon that only Knox has. You. The crowds that Knox brings is unrivaled to any one else's. With this weapon no other school can match, our swimmers will swim to victory.

One of the most amazing feelings is standing side by side with your friends and cheering your school on. Watching your swimmers break away to the fierce roar of your school. Watching that swimmer win and hearing the banging of seats, seeing the other schools sit down in despair. Nothing beats it. Shouting all night until your voice cracks. The immense pride that you feel as you walk away at the end of the night knowing you saw your school win. Nothing beats it. And when you get home and your mum tells you that you won't have to go to school tomorrow because you lost your voice.

So don't miss out come with me and cheer your school on this Thursday. Its going to be a night to remember.
